AVID Microchip
What is the AVID Microchip?
The AVID microchip is a permanent form of identification for your pet.
How does it work?
It is a small microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) that is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades. The microchip is read by passing a scanner over the shoulder area of an animal. If your animal is picked up by a police department or animal control it will be scanned for a microchip. Most area vet hospitals also have scanners. The chip only works to reunite you with your pets as long as your contact information is maintained & up-to-date. Please contact Animal Control when planning a move or in the event your contact information changes.
Where can I get this done?
We do this for a $15.00 fee at DuPage County Animal Care and Control. We schedule appointments on Thursday afternoons between 1 pm and 6 pm. You will need a current rabies certificate in order for DuPage County to microchip your pet. Your vet may also do microchipping.
Is this painful for the animal?
The area in which the microchip is injected is said to have about the same amount of nerve endings as the human ear lobe. It is thought to be about as painful as getting your ear pierced. Most animals seem to have little or no discomfort.
