DuPage Hosts Free Training, Job Placement Program for Veterans
DuPage County and workNet DuPage are hosting a free training and job placement program for Illinois veterans – the Building Operator Certification (BOC) for Veterans.
DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the BOC Veterans Pilot Program is currently recruiting unemployed and underemployed veterans to participate in the training program that begins in January at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. The BOC training program targets veterans who have experience and skills that are readily transferable to commercial building operations and maintenance.
“DuPage County is proud to offer this training program to the men and women who have served our country. Often times our military personnel have a difficult time returning to the civilian workforce and this BOC training program is a great example of how public and private sectors can work together to provide the training necessary to help veterans qualify for and locate employment opportunities,” said Cronin.
The program is led by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) in partnership with DuPage County, workNet DuPage, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development (DCEO), the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and several other state and local organizations.
The program will include eight days of technical training on energy-efficient building operations and maintenance, a mentoring program and employment workshops focused on resume building, interviewing skills and job searching. The entire program is provided to qualified veterans free of charge. BOC training normally costs $1,250.
Upon graduation, the BOC-certified veterans will be qualified to apply for jobs related to energy efficient equipment upgrades and indoor air quality improvements.
Applicants for certification must be unemployed or underemployed veterans and have one of the following:
- Two or more years of experience working in operations and maintenance of a commercial or institutional facility and/or related experience in the military as an engineer, electrician, technician, HVAC maintenance and repair worker, boiler operator, etc; OR
- A minimum of one year of work experience as described above AND one year of technical college level education in a facilities engineering related program; and
- It is highly recommended that applicants have a high school diploma or GED.
