The following is a job description for the position of Deputy Coroner:
Under general supervision; performs work of moderate mental and physical difficulty while conducting investigations into the manner and cause of death of any person whose death occurs under the jurisdiction of the Coroner within the boundaries of DuPage County, and performs all related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Deputy Coroners, duly appointed and qualified, may perform any and all of the duties of the coroner in the name of the coroner, and the acts of such deputies shall be held to be acts of the coroner. General supervision is provided by the Chief Deputy Coroner and the DuPage County Coroner.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES TO BE PERFORMED WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS:
Conducts investigations into the manner and cause of death of any individual whose death falls under the jurisdiction of the Coroner as defined by Illinois statutes; conducts investigations including, but not limited to, deaths that are sudden or of a violent nature, fetal deaths, sex crimes, crimes against nature, deaths that are suspicious, mysterious or obscure or where the attending physician’s written opinion states the cause as undetermined, deaths caused by any drug or alcohol addiction, deaths where the decedent was not attended by a licensed physician; initiates investigation into the cause and manner of death upon proper notification; reports to the location of the death, as deemed necessary, to discuss with family, police, firefighters, paramedics, witnesses or others the circumstances surrounding the death; obtains blood, urine or other specimens from the deceased, as necessary, in an attempt to determine cause of death; forwards samples and specimens to a certified toxicology laboratory for analysis; orders an autopsy and/or X-rays as needed; processes specimens according to established directions including proper labeling, sealing and securing; communicates with funeral homes, at the family’s direction, to arrange for removal of decedent from scene, hospital or morgue; issues temporary or permanent certificates of death upon completion of the related stage of the investigation process; investigates and authorizes the issuance of a cremate permit as appropriate; if appropriate training has been completed, assists the pathologist with exams, including the removal of internal organs or body fluids; provides reports to the State’s Attorney’s Office as requested; documents and secures pertinent personal property of the deceased and completes related property control forms; completes required emergency management training.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Good knowledge of modern methods and practices of death investigation; good knowledge of the geographic details of DuPage County.
Working skill in observing details surrounding a case; working skill in verbal and/or written communications; working skill in dealing effectively with others, including skill in communicating in an empathetic manner with family members who may be emotional or distraught; working skill in handling dead human bodies, often under undesirable circumstances.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and / or arms to perform examinations. This position periodically subjects the deputy to adverse weather conditions, unfavorable odors and times of highly emotional situations.
SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
One year of investigative training either in a private agency or with a Police Department; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
This position requires a valid Illinois driver's license.
