Counselor in Court Program

The Counselor in Court program has been developed to give borrowers a resource when they appear in foreclosure court.

After an appearance before the judge, individuals have the option of meeting with the DuPage Homeowners Center (DHOC) to briefly discuss options for resolving their mortgage delinquency. Providing actual counseling in court is not possible due to time limitations and the need for advance preparation by the borrower. However, many of the borrowers appearing in court need information about their alternatives or need help in continuing to work with their lender. DHOC is in court to provide some direction for their next steps and to help them avoid misinformation.

The DuPage Homeownership Center is a not for profit HUD approved housing counseling agency. Borrowers who are behind on their mortgages are referred to agencies like DHOC for assistance by their lenders. DHOC requires their clients to attend a foreclosure prevention workshop prior to making a counseling appointment in order to familiarize them with all of their options and to prepare them to meet with a counselor or work on their own with their lender. This information is available on the DHOC web site .
