POSITION SUMMARY
Under general direction; performs work of considerable difficulty in supervising the recreational therapy programs, activities and events at the Convalescent Center; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the coordination of all aspects of recreation services.  This position spends a substantial amount of time supervising and coordinating the work of the Recreation Division staff.  General direction is received from the Assistant Administrator of the Convalescent Center. Supervision is provided to the Recreation Service Supervisor and recreation service staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervises the work of subordinate personnel engaged in providing recreation and activity services for residents
• Recommends hires and promotions, directs and evaluates employment decisions for all assigned positions
• Ensures that department documentation and programming meets federal and state guidelines through monitoring and training
• Provide clinical supervision to recreation services staff
• Mentors and provides professional skill development opportunities for staff
• Meets Illinois Department of Public Aid (IDPA), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) regulations as they apply to long term health care
• Long term care requirements through the direction and development of recreation therapy programs, services and documentation
• Ensures program development and implementation that maintains the interest of and improves the quality of life of residents
• Monitors unit and all house recreation therapy programs to determine progress toward department and facility goals
• Monitors the division’s budget and tracks expenditures
• Plans and organizes unit activities and coordinates all house activities
• Assesses staff competency
• Takes an active role in management and multi-disciplinary team meetings
• Rotates manager on duty weekend coverage as scheduled
• Acts as a liaison between the Convalescent Center and community organizations in regards to planning for resident programs
• Coordinates services with other Convalescent Center departments to maximize resources
• Assists with the coordination of various fundraising events
• Keeps current with job related professional developments and/or regulations
• Maintains regular attendance and punctuality

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Adjusts work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities as assigned.
• Depending on assignment may maintain required emergency management training, licensure and/or certifications.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned within job classification.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Exercises supervision of personnel in related area of responsibility.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy or related field and four years of experience in a recreational setting within a supervisory position;  or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The work will occur in an office and field environment.  This position regularly includes working with residents. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to quiet.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
This position requires certification as a Recreational Therapist as required by the State of Illinois.  Additionally, this position requires a valid Illinois driver’s license.
