Trail Maintenance and Construction Activities

The purpose of this section of the website is to provide trail users with quick information regarding maintenance and construction activities along the trail system which may result in some inconvenience to users ranging from temporary closures and detours to maintenance vehicles and equipment on the path that you will have to avoid.  

In late 2003, DuPage County adopted a new Trail Maintenance Policy which includes guidelines for how the system is maintained by DuPage County staff. The recommendations were put together by a task force of members representing a variety of interests including County personnel, municipal representatives, agencies with expertise in managing trails and vegetation, and trail user and interest groups.  A copy of the full report with all recommendations can be viewed by clicking on the below file. In addition to managing vegetation to maintain a safe path for all users, the report includes a number of other recommendations which the County and other agencies and groups will be working to implement over the next several years.

Listed below are current maintenance and construction activities which would be of interest to trail users.  Please keep in mind this work does not include emergency work crews that may be called out to respond to downed trees and branches as a result of high winds or other storm damage.

Routine Tree Trimming and Maintenance

• Illinois Prairie Path Aurora Branch, Roosevelt to Winfield, Wheaton and Warrenville

Drainage Culvert Replacement

Roadway Projects

• I-88 and Eola Road interchange - affects Illinois Prairie Path Batavia Spur at crossing.  Utility relocation work underway. Construction to start late April, 2009

• Retaining wall work, IPP Aurora Branch, Warrenville; IPP Main Stem east of Finley, Lombard

ComEd Routine Tree Trimming and Equipment Maintenance

• Transmission line extension, Illinois Prairie Path Aurora Branch west of Eola Road, West Chicago (January-April, 2009) 
• Routine tree trimming -Illinois Prairie Path Elgin Branch, North Avenue northwest to Kane County line, Wayne 
• Emergency tree trimming to respond to storm problems as needed

Municipal and Other Maintenance and Construction Projects

• Village of Lombard, Great Western Trail/Grace Street Bridge, engineering and soil boring work
• City of Wheaton, Illinois Prairie Path Elgin Branch/Volunteer Bridge, extensive bridge work over Wesley and railroad affecting IPP Volunteer Bridge which will be raised in height .  Project start for late summer/early fall 2009 construction with IPP bridge work late Fall, early Spring.  Watch for posted detour and check out City of Wheaton website for more specific details under Engineering Dept./Wesley-Manchester Bridge Project .
• Warrenville Road reconstruction and infrastructure improvements (crossing IPP Aurora Branch), Construction start lApril, 2009  
• 75th Street and Washington, Southern DuPage County Regional Trail and West Branch DuPage River Trail, follow posted detour (starting Winter, 2008)
• Village of Winfield sewer line project, County Farm Road adjacent to Great Western Trail
• Illinois Department of Transportation work along Route 53, Lombard (no impact to the trails but work vehicles may be observed)
