Bikeways & Trails Bicycling on Our Roads In 2004, the County adopted the DuPage County Healthy Roads Initiative with the goal of assuring the County roadway system meets the needs of non-motorized transportation in future construction. The policy also requires more community and public involvement in the planning and design process and requires measures to minimize negative environmental impacts of any roadway projects. Since 2004, 18 roadway and trail projects have been undertaken by the Division of Transportation that included sidewalk, sidepaths and/or bicycle friendly roadway designs as required by the new policy. To further assist the Division of Transportation in providing accommodations for on-road bicycle facilities, two advisory reports were adopted in 2007 with input from the public and user groups. The DuPage County On-Road Bicycle Facilities Guidelines and the DuPage County On-Road Bicycle Connection Guidelines will be used by County transportation engineers to evaluate potential improvements for new roadway projects. Lastly, other projects and activities which make roads healthier by providing more environmentally-friendly design considerations or meet special non-motorized transportation needs have been completed or underway including:
Healthy Roads Policy Amendment - 2008 The DuPage County Board recently took action to amend its 2004 Healthy Roads Policy to expand the opportunities to provide on-road bicycle accommodations on County Highways when undertaking major highway improvements in the future. The policy also allows the Division of Transportation to examine low cost improvements which may allow for additional facilities to be added such as re-striping existing roadways.
