Short description of work
Between Olympus Drive and Oxford Lane, 75th Street consists of two lanes in each direction separated by a raised median, and has a paved shoulder on each side. There is a single left turn lane in each direction at the intersection of Washington Street. In order to accommodate current and future traffic volumes, 75th Street will be reconstructed and widened to three lanes in each direction between Clyde Drive and River Drive, with right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes in all four directions at the 75th Street / Washington Street intersection. A pedestrian tunnel will cross under Washington Street just north of 75th Street and the 75th Street bridge is being reconstructed to include a pedestrian passage along the river. Other work includes utility relocations, traffic signals, storm sewers, retaining walls, pedestrian path, landscaping, and lighting.
Washington Street will be widened to three lanes southbound from Clyde Drive to Bunting Lane, and three lanes northbound between Bunting Lane and Hobson Road. The northbound lane becomes a right turn lane at Hobson Road, with only two lanes continuing north. A small part of Hobson Road will also be reconstructed as part of the project.
Traffic Control
This project will be constructed under several stages.
Pre-Stages include temporary traffic signal installation, mainline storm sewer installation along 75th Street west of Washington Street, retaining walls and grading. Daily lane closures will be used for much of this work, but some of the work will require lane closures to be in place for several weeks.
Stage 1 includes construction of eastbound 75th Street and northbound Washington Street. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction during this Stage. Some sidestreets will require closure from time to time.
Winter shutdown: It is planned to complete Stage 1 in December 2009, with two lanes and a left turn lane open in each direction.
Stage 2 includes construction of westbound 75th Street and southbound Washington Street. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction during this Stage. Some sidestreets will require closure from time to time.
Stage 3 includes completion of the traffic signals, pavement surface course, pavement markings, and landscaping. Although additional lanes will have been constructed, traffic will be allowed only two lanes in each direction; some operations may require additional short term lane closures. Stage 3 is expected to extend into spring 2011.
