Celebrating Volunteers, the Heart of Our Community

WHEATON, IL ― On Thursday, April 24th, the DuPage Convalescent Center will be honoring volunteers during its 28th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception.  The event themed “Volunteers, the heart of the community” is an annual reception that highlights volunteers for their dedication and support of the residents.

It is through the help of Volunteers that  the DuPage Convalescent Center is able to offer an extra dimension of care and services to the residents of the Center by supporting the mission of helping residents do as much as they can, as well as they can for as long as they can.

This year, Volunteers Chuck Kramer of Wheaton and David Anderson of Warrenville, will both receive awards for 35 years of volunteer service to the Center.  Mr. Kramer is one of the lead volunteers in charge of the weekly Catholic Mass, and is an active member of both the Volunteer Advisory Board and the Chaplains Committee.  Mr. Anderson, a 25 year Chaplain at Central DuPage Hospital, is a 1:1 companion and spiritual supporter of the residents at the Center.  Both have generously given of their time to provide a greater quality of life for the nearly 350 residents at the Center.  These Milestone awards will be presented by County Board Chairman Robert J. Schillerstrom, Convalescent Center Administrator Beth Welch and Manager of Resident and Volunteer Services Shauna Berman.

Administrator Beth Welch notes, “Volunteers provide a great gift to the residents.  They provide the gift of their time and truly are the heart of the organization.  Volunteers make DuPage Convalescent Center a home.  We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to the residents’ quality-of-life and are thankful each day they continue to play an integral role in providing the day-to-day care of the residents.”

In 2007, nearly 450 volunteers donated over 34,600 hours of volunteer service to the Center.  If the volunteers were paid employees the value of their time would equal over $675,000.
