FIRST SNOW WELCOMES “WINTER AWARENESS WEEK”

DU PAGE COUNTY – In recognition of Weather Awareness Week, DuPage County wants to remind all residents to be as cautious as possible during the upcoming months.

“Snow and freezing temperatures can cause dangerous conditions for driving, walking and playing outside,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Robert J. Schillerstrom.

Cold weather can lead to not only hypothermia and frostbite, but also internal injury.  Major winter storms can last for several days, and are often accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or sleet.  It is crucial to stay warm and dry during these periods of heavy snowfall and cold temperatures.

When venturing outside during this kind of weather, wear loose, lightweight, warm clothes in layers, as trapped air insulates.  Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded. Wear a hat, as half your body heat loss can be from the head. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs from extreme cold, and wear mittens, snug at the wrist, which are better than gloves.
