TIPS FOR DRIVING DURING BAD WINTER WEATHER

DU PAGE COUNTY – DuPage County wants to ensure residents are taking safety precautions during snowy and dangerous driving conditions. 

When heavy snow occurs, it is best to plan your travel and check the latest weather reports to avoid the storm.  Make sure that you have items like a cell phone with charger and/or batteries, flashlight, first-aid kit, shovel, windshield scraper and brush, tool kit, booster cables, a compass and road maps.  During the winter months, try to keep your gas tank near full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.  Also, avoid traveling alone, and let someone know your travel schedules and routes.

Check your car’s brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater and exhaust system, making sure all are in good condition.  Be sure to also check your antifreeze and be ready for colder temperatures.  Make sure your tires are properly inflated and the tread is in good condition.  It is also a good idea to take along water, food, warm blankets and extra clothing.  A lengthy delay will make you glad you have them.

Remember to slow down when driving through winter storms.  A highway speed of 65 miles per hour may be safe in dry weather, but an invitation for trouble on snow and ice.   Snow and ice make stopping distances much longer, so keep your seat belt buckled and leave more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.  Bridge decks and shady spots can be icy when other areas are not. Remember to avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes.
