Joseph E. Birkett Biographical Information

Joseph E. Birkett was sworn in as DuPage County State's Attorney on October 1, 1996 to succeed Anthony Peccarelli in filling the unexpired term of Jim Ryan, who was elected Illinois Attorney General.  Joe was later elected to the position for a four-year term in November of 1996 and re-elected for another 4-year term in November of 2004 and 2008.

  • 1985-1986 Chief of Major Crimes Unit - Supervised prosecution of Drug Delivery Cases
  • 1981-1996 Assistant State's Attorney - Moved up within the Criminal Division, trying cases first in Traffic Court, Misdemeanor Courtrooms, Juvenile Courtrooms and Felony Courtrooms

In total, tried over one hundred felony cases to verdict, including death penalty jury trials.
