Statement Of State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett Regarding Court Proceedings In People V. Fedell Caffey

Today, Mr. Richard Kling, on behalf of convicted murderer Fedell Caffey made accusations of misconduct in open court regarding the conduct of the dedicated members of my staff who brought Mr. Caffey to justice for the vicious killings of Debra Evans and her two children, Samantha and Joshua. Judge Peter Dockery ruled today that these unsupported allegations did not merit the appointment of a special prosecutor. Mr. Kling’s motion was dismissed.

Furthermore, videotaped statements of the two witnesses who allegedly made the allegations have been shown to NBC 5/WMAQ representatives. On these tapes, both of these witnesses adamantly deny that there was any wrongdoing by any Assistant State’s Attorney.

The attorneys who prosecuted Fedell Caffey, Laverne Ward and Jacqueline Williams for the Evans family murders displayed the highest standards of professionalism, both inside and outside of the courtroom. As journalists you have the responsibility to air the truth. The truth is that these sensational accusations are unsupported by any evidence because they are false.
