Michael Alfonso’s Capture & Extradition Details
Due to flight cancellations, Michael Alfonso will be turned over to the Harris County Texas Sheriff’s Office. Alfonso was turned over today by Mexican Immigration Officials to Wheaton Police Department Detectives who are also Deputy U.S. Marshals. Because Alfonso is considered a high escape risk, Wheaton Police and the U.S. Marshal’s Officials decided that Alfonso would be housed in a jail facility while transportation issues are resolved.
Alfonso will have an opportunity to challenge extradition. However, he has been positively identified as the same man who is wanted in connection with the Genoveva Velasquez and Sumanear Yang murders. State’s Attorney Birkett, Kendall County State’s Attorney Tim McCann and Illinois officials, including the Governor’s Office, will take the necessary steps to ensure that the extradition process is expedited.
Even in the event that Alfonso refuses to waive extradition, his potential court challenges should be resolved within 30 to 90 days. State’s Attorney Birkett added that given the fact that Alfonso’s fugitive status lasted more than three (3) years, the knowledge that he will face these charges here in Illinois within the next few months is great news, and a tremendous relief to all those involved, especially the Velasquez and Yang families.
