School Teacher/Church Youth Leader Charged with Sexual Misconduct of a Child

DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett announced today that a Youth Leader at Calvary Church in Naperville was indicted by a DuPage County Grand Jury on Tuesday, August 10th for sexual misconduct involving a 14 year old child. Lloyd D. Jones, 43 (d.o.b. 1/12/61), with a last known address of 2823 Gypsum Circle in Naperville was indicted on a total of three (3) counts, including two (2) counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse and one (1) count of Criminal Sexual Assault. Calvary Church immediately removed Jones from service as a Youth Leader at the Church. Jones is employed as a school teacher at Kennedy High School in Chicago. A warrant for his arrest was issued, with a $100,000 bond. He has not yet been arrested.

The victim told a family member about the alleged abuse, and the church was contacted. The church contacted the Naperville Police Department which, along with the assistance of the DuPage County Children’s Center, conducted the investigation. It was learned that the defendant knew the victim through his involvement as a Youth Leader at the Calvary Church, but the alleged abuse did not occur on church grounds. It is alleged that during the fall of 1999, the defendant engaged in improper sexual conduct with the victim while at the defendant’s home in Naperville. The child recently brought the alleged abuse to the attention of family members.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the DuPage County Grand Jury, who returned a three count indictment on August 10th for Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class 1 felony and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, a Class 2 felony. If found guilty, Jones faces penalties of 4-15 years for the Criminal Sexual Assault and 3-7 years for the Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.

State’s Attorney Birkett expressed his appreciation for the thorough and professional investigation conducted by Detective Dan Ragusa of the Naperville Police Department and Investigator Steve Arp of the DuPage County Children’s Center. He also thanked Assistant State’s Attorney Alex McGimpsey, Supervisor of the Domestic Violence & Child Abuse Unit of his office for his assistance.

"The protection of our children is one of the highest priorities of my office," State’s Attorney Birkett declared. "Here, this victim’s parents trusted this defendant because he was their child’s church leader, and that trust was allegedly violated. I want to thank Reverend Steve Andres and the staff at Calvary Church for immediately notifying authorities when they were informed of the allegations. This kind of cooperation is a critical component of protecting our youth from child molesters."

The defendant’s next court date will be determined following his arrest.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who has any information regarding this case or any other suspected child abuse should contact the Naperville Police Department at 630/420-6664 or the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center at 630/407-2750.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
