State’s Attorney & Local Law Enforcement to Assist with Election Day Concerns
DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced that his office once again will be assisting with the Election Day process. For the past decade, the State’s Attorney’s Office has assigned a team of Assistant State’s Attorneys and Investigators to handle any irregularities of a criminal nature that may occur while DuPage County polling places are open on Election Day. Next Tuesday, November 2nd, State’s Attorney Birkett will have prosecutors and investigators available at the State’s Attorney’s Office and at polling places throughout the County. His staff will also maintain communications throughout the day and into the evening with officials at the DuPage County Board of Elections Office in Wheaton. Law enforcement officials from throughout the county have also pledged to assist in this effort, including deputies of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
“Every voter should have open access to the polls without interference or intimidation,” State’s Attorney Birkett said. “I am honored to have the responsibility to help safeguard this fundamental right.”
Investigators of the State’s Attorney’s Office will be randomly visiting polls throughout the county as well as responding to any problems of a criminal nature that are called in to the office while the polls are open. This coordinated effort with law enforcement and the open lines of communication with the DuPage County Board of Elections will help to ensure both compliance with Election Code as well as the safety of all voters and election officials.
“We must all do our part to guarantee that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot on Election Day,” said DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba. “As we do during every election, we will have Deputy Sheriffs available to respond to election concerns throughout the day in order to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.”
The polls will open on Tuesday, November 2nd at 6:00 a.m. and remain open until 7:00 p.m. Anyone who has questions or is concerned about activities going on at any DuPage County polling place can contact either the DuPage County Board of Elections at (630) 407-5600 or the State’s Attorney’s Office at (630) 407-8090.
