INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO GLEN ELLYN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

WHEATON – Glen Ellyn Police Chief Phil Norton together with the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force, DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office announced that an investigation is underway into an officer involved shooting which occurred last night at an apartment located at 33 Briar Street in Glen Ellyn.

The investigation at this point has revealed that at approximately 6:05 p.m., last night, the Glen Ellyn Police Department received an emergency 911 call requesting assistance for possible physical domestic violence to children at that address.

The responding officer was able to prevent harm to two children, one three-year-old and one one-year-old during the course of the events.  Unfortunately, during the course of a struggle with Benjamin Uwumarogie (d.o.b. 6-29-83), the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Uwumarogie resulting in his death.

A full investigation of all the facts and circumstances including the use of force and discharge of the weapon by the officer will continue.  The officer was treated for injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital and was released late last night.

No further information will be discussed until the investigation is completed.
