States Attorney
WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett today announced that Jose Arevalo, 19, (d.o.b. 5/21/87) of Carpentersville, was charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Unlawful Use of a Credit Card and one count of Attempted Armed Robbery in connection with two separate incidents at businesses located in Addison and Roselle.
The charges stem from allegations that in the evening of December 10, Arevalo allegedly went to the Roselle business where he charged nearly $1,000 using a stolen credit card. Shortly thereafter, Arevalo allegedly returned to the business and attempted to make another purchase using another stolen credit card. During his second visit to the business however, Arevalo was denied by the business employee. At approximately 12:40 a.m., December 11, Arevalo allegedly returned to the business, armed with a BB rifle. He allegedly aimed the gun at the business employee and stole more than $700 in cash. Arevalo then allegedly fled the scene in a car. The employee immediately called Roselle police who apprehended Arevalo minutes later without incident. The second incident occurred on November 19, 2006. In this incident, Arevalo allegedly attempted to enter a business in Addison armed with the same BB rifle he used in Roselle.
“I would like to commend the Roselle Police Department and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for apprehending Mr. Arevalo in such quick fashion before anyone was harmed,” commented Birkett.
If found guilty of the counts Arevalo faces penalties of up to thirty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
