States Attorney
Elk Grove Village Man Charged With Obstructing Justice
in Rebecca Klein Murder Investigation
WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett and Villa Park Police Chief John Payne announced today Robert L. Edwards, 40 (d.o.b. 10/5/66) of 949 Wilshire Elk Grove Village has been charged with one count of Obstructing Justice, a Class 4 Felony punishable by up to 3 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, for providing material false information in the murder investigation of Rebecca Klein.
The investigation revealed that Edwards was at the home of Nicole Abusharif and Rebecca Klein when the police first arrived at the home in response to a missing persons report filed by Nicole. In the initial interview, as well as subsequent interviews, it is alleged that Edwards lied to the police regarding his whereabouts when Rebecca Klein was murdered. It is believed that Edwards was driving a green 1994 Plymouth van with ladders on top.
Edwards appeared in Bond Court yesterday morning where Judge Ron Sutter ordered he be held on a $1 million bond with 10% to apply.
Anyone who had contact with Edwards in the afternoon or evening of Thursday, March 15, 2007, or in the days leading up to and including when Rebecca Klein’s body was found on Saturday, March 17, 2007, should contact the Villa Park Police Department at (630) 834-7447.
Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
