States Attorney
FORMER UPS EMPLOYEE INDICTED FOR
THEFT IN EXCESS OF $500,000
WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that charges have been filed against a former twenty-year UPS employee, Victoria Pavek, 47 (d.o.b. 6/6/1958 ) of 1013 W. Downer Place, Aurora involving the theft of more than $500,000 from the Atlanta-based company. Pavek, who was employed by UPS as a Supervisor in the Collection Department during the time these alleged offenses were committed, was arrested earlier today without incident by the Addison Police Department on a $1 million warrant issued by Judge William Ferguson.
The charges against Pavek allege that between November, 1998 and October, 2006, Pavek diverted UPS funds into either her own bank account or used UPS funds to pay for various personal expenses on numerous occasions. In total, she is alleged to have embezzled nearly $800,000 from UPS over a period of nearly eight years.
UPS detected the missing funds and conducted their own thorough, internal investigation. Following their investigation, they contacted the State’s Attorney’s Office and the Addison Police Department and turned over their findings.
“White collar crime is one of the most under-reported crimes in our society,” commented Birkett. “The accused is often times a trusted member of an organization and knows how to cover their tracks. I commend the leadership at UPS for their pro-active role in uncovering the alleged theft and for bringing this matter to us for prosecution. I would also like to commend Assistant State’s Attorneys Timothy Diamond and William Wu for their efforts in this case as well as the Addison Police Department, particularly Detective Sean Gilhooley for their professionalism and determination in bringing Mrs. Pavek to justice.”
Theft over $500,000 is a Class 1 non-probationable felony punishable by 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Members of the public are reminded that a complaint contains only charges and is not proof of a defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
