Hosts Special Memorial Meeting
WHEATON – In recognition of National Crime Victims Week, the DuPage County and beyond Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) held a special meeting last night in honor of lives taken suddenly and violently through murder or reckless homicide.
Founded in 1978, the POMC offers support in a group atmosphere to help anyone, including family and friends, who have suffered the loss of a loved one through murder or reckless homicide. Last night’s meeting was attended by approximately fifty crime victims. While most of the attendees were from DuPage County, residents from Kane County were also in attendance. In addition, survivors who lost a loved one nearly 30 years ago, in 1978, were also in attendance.
Last night’s meeting featured the dedication of a wall in memory of those lives taken violently from us. Attendees brought pictures, poetry and mementos of their loved one for the memorial wall. These mementos will remain on the memorial wall in the Victim’s Waiting Room in the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
“The pain and devastation experienced by the loss of a loved one does not stop,” commented State’s Attorney Birkett. “It is something that must be worked through. That is why the POMC is so important. It gives those experiencing that pain a place to go where they can feel free to discuss their emotions with like individuals who can truly empathize with the pain they are feeling.”
