States Attorney
INMATE GETS 25 YEARS IN MURDER
FOR HIRE PLOT
WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett announced today that William G. Kaspar, 36 (d.o.b. 10/21/70) of 2230 Grover Street, Blue Island, was sentenced to 25 years in the Department of Corrections for attempting to hire a DuPage County Sheriff’s Detective posing as a hit man to kill a witness in a case pending against him.
In June 2005, while in the DuPage County Jail awaiting sentencing for Violating and Order of Protection and Criminal Damage to Property, Kaspar approached another inmate offering money to murder the boyfriend of his former girlfriend. The inmate alerted authorities to Kaspar’s proposal resulting in an investigation by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation, which revealed that Kaspar offered the Sheriff’s Detective $5,000 to commit the murder, led to the filing of Solicitation to Commit Murder for Hire charges and ultimately today’s sentence.
“I am very pleased with the sentence handed down by Judge Burke this afternoon,” commented Birkett. “I would like to applaud the DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba and his Office for their fine work in uncovering this scheme. Today’s sentence sends a strong message that our criminal justice system must be protected and that any attempt to harass a witness, let alone murder them, will carry significant consequences.”
Kaspar will be required to serve 85% of his sentence.
