REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER, ICE CREAM TRUCK DRIVER SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS

WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett today announced that registered child sex offender Raymond Mitchell, 59 (d.o.b. 1/14/1948), of 3917 Haas Avenue, Lyons, entered a plea of guilty to one count of Unlawful Association by a Child Sex Offender, Class 4 Felony.   Upon entering his guilty plea in front of Judge Kathryn Creswell, Mitchell was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Today’s sentence is the result of a June 30, 2007 incident in which a child was struck by a passing vehicle after purchasing ice cream from Mitchell.   The child was not seriously injured.  An investigation into the matter revealed that at the time of the accident, Mitchell was on probation for child pornography.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett commented on the sentence handed down by Judge Creswell stating, “I am very pleased that Judge Creswell sentenced Mr. Mitchell to a significant amount of time behind bars.  It is absolutely outrageous that a registered sex offender would even attempt to find work in a field where his primary customers are children.  Mr. Mitchell is a prime example of why we have sex offender registration laws.  He is a man who was previously found guilty of sex crimes against children, yet still attempted to surround himself with children.  I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Cathy DeLaMar as well as the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for their work in keeping this predator away from the children of DuPage County.”

Mitchell, who has been in custody since June 30, will receive credit for the time he has already served in the DuPage County Jail.
