SCHAUMBURG MAN SENTENCED TO 30 DAYS FOR INDECENT SOLICITATION OF A CHILD
32 year-old met victim through Internet chat room
WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that William F. Murphy, 33 (d.o.b. 11/05/1973 ), of 1514 Harbour Ct., Schaumburg was sentenced today to thirty days in the DuPage County Jail after pleading guilty to one count of Indecent Solicitation of a Child, a Class 3 Felony. This morning, Murphy entered a blind plea of guilty to the charge and was sentenced by Judge Mark Dwyer.
On June 7, 2006, Murphy was arrested by the Winfield Police Department with the assistance of the Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force, when he traveled to Winfield in an attempt to have sex with a minor he had met through an Internet chat room. The minor Murphy met however, was actually a Winfield police officer.
“Last year, William Murphy attempted to make a victim out of a minor he met through an Internet chat room,” commented Birkett. “Through on-line conversations, he gained his victim’s trust, and, after doing so, on June seventh of last year, William Murphy made the drive from Schaumburg to Winfield to have sex with his victim. While we would have hoped for a more significant jail sentence, perhaps thirty days behind bars will be long enough to keep Mr. Murphy from ever making another such drive again in the future. Thankfully, Mr. Murphy was caught before he could cause any harm. This case is yet another reminder that we must be vigilant in protecting our children from the possible dangers that lurk on the Internet.”
In addition to his jail sentence, Murphy was also ordered to serve 30 months sex offender probation, register as a sex offender, submit a DNA sample for entry into the state’s sex offender DNA database and pay fees and court costs.
