HOFFMAN ESTATES MAN CHARGED IN STRING OF ARMED ROBBERIES THROUGH DU PAGE COUNTY

WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that Michael D. Daniels, 54 (d.o.b. 04/13/1953) of 1075 Knoll Lane, Hoffman Estates, has been charged in connection with a string of armed robberies throughout DuPage County including Westmont, Itasca, Oakbrook Terrace, Willowbrook and Darien.  The robberies occurred between October 1, 2007 through November 1, 2007.

The charges stem from allegations that between October 1, 2007 through November 1, 2007, on at least seven different occasions, Daniels allegedly entered DuPage County businesses, showed employees a handgun and demanded money.  On November 24, Daniels was apprehended by Chicago police and charged with Armed Robbery in Chicago.  Daniels is currently being held in the Cook County jail.  In all, Daniels is charged with 5 counts of Armed Robbery, 5 counts of Aggravated Robbery, one count of Attempted Armed Robbery and one count of Attempted Aggravated Robbery.

“For one month, DuPage County businesses and their employees, who were just trying to make a living, were terrorized by an armed robber,” commented Birkett.  “We allege that Mr. Daniels was this one man crime wave.  I would like to thank the Chicago Police Department for their apprehension of Mr. Daniels as well as the victims of these robberies for their assistance. ”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
