BIRKETT NAMED NEW PRESIDENT OF ILLINOIS STATE’S ATTORNEY’S ASSOCIATION

WHEATON – The Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association announced today it has named DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett President of the Association.  Formed in the 1930s, the Association is comprised of State’s Attorneys representing each of Illinois’ 102 counties.

In addition to overseeing the management of the State Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, the Association assists State’s Attorneys throughout Illinois by providing policy guidance, advocating on major issues of concern to State’s Attorney’s Offices such as the crime trends and criminal justice reform as well as proposing and monitoring legislation.  The Association also offers Continuing Legal Education courses to Assistant State’s Attorneys on a bi-annual basis, the most recent of which was held last week in Chicago.

“I am extremely honored to serve as President of the Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association,” remarked Birkett.  “Since its inception, the Association has accomplished much and has provided clarity and focus to the responsibilities of State’s Attorneys in Illinois’ criminal justice system.  And perhaps most importantly, the Association also provides State’s Attorneys throughout Illinois a unified voice in Springfield in matters that affect crime and punishment throughout Illinois.”

Birkett is the Association’s 72nd President.  His term runs through December 1, 2008.
