Hinsdale Central High School Student Charged With Disorderly Conduct

WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph E. Birkett announced today that charges have been filed against a Hinsdale Central High School senior for allegedly threatening students and faculty at the high school.

The charges stem from allegations that on December 13, 2007, the student wrote on a desk at the school.  The following day, two students alerted a teacher to the writing, which was allegedly of a threatening nature.  The teacher notified the School Resource Officer who in turn alerted the school Deans.  An investigation by the Hinsdale Police Department and school officials resulted in the filing of today’s charges.

“Without getting into the details of what was allegedly written on that desk, I will say that whenever there is a threat made at a school, that threat must be taken very seriously,” commented Birkett.  “Teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn if they instead are concerned about their own personal safety.  We must do all we can to ensure that our schools remain free from violence and threats of violence.  I would like to thank the students who alerted school officials to the writing as well as the school officials at Hinsdale Central High School for their quick action and for bringing this matter to our attention.”

The student has been suspended from Hinsdale Central High School pending any further disciplinary action.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
