States Attorney GLENBARD SOUTH STUDENT CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that Maurice Cullum, 17, (d.o.b. 2/20/1991), of Glen Ellyn, has been charged with one count of Aggravated Battery as the result of an incident at the high school this morning. The charges stem from allegations that at approximately 7:40 a.m. this morning before classes had started, there was an altercation between Cullum and another student within school. The victim, an employee of the school, responded to the disturbance and attempted to separate Cullum and the other student. It is alleged that it was at this time that Cullum threw the victim to the ground on more than one occasion, causing minor injuries. “With the end of the school year upon us, we must remain vigilant in keeping our schools as safe as possible” commented Birkett. “Teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn if they fear for their own personal safety while at school. Any act of violence, or even the threat of violence, at a school will be dealt with immediately and vigorously prosecuted.” Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
