STATE’S ATTORNEY’S ELECTION DAY TEAM TO MONITOR DU PAGE COUNTY POLLS

WHEATONDuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that his office will again deploy dozens of Assistant State’s Attorneys and Investigators to manage any suspected irregularities that may arise at DuPage County polling locations on Election Day.

“Fair elections are not achieved by accident,” remarked Birkett.  “It takes a coordinated effort to insure that our most fundamental right is protected from fraud and interference.  As we have done in every election since I became State’s Attorney, we will again deploy dozens of Assistant State’s Attorneys throughout DuPage County to canvass polling places and to respond to suspected violations of the election code.  In addition to my staff, local law enforcement officers as well as Sheriff’s Deputies will blanket polling places throughout our county.”

Last week, State’s Attorney’s Investigators and Assistants received in-depth training regarding potential violations, presented by the DuPage County Election Commission under the direction of Election Commissioner for DuPage County Robert Saar.  Law enforcement will be on the alert for anyone who presents false identification, either to cast a vote or to act as a poll watcher.  Individuals who engage in this conduct will not only be turned away at the polls, but will also be prosecuted.  “We will also be on the alert for persons who attempt to vote more than once; individuals who try to obstruct or interfere with the right of any person to vote; as well as tampering with voting equipment.  These are all serious violations of the law and carry felony penalties.” added Birkett.

Polls will be open on Tuesday, November 4th from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.  Members of the public who have questions or concerns about activities going on at any DuPage County polling place are encouraged to contact the State’s Attorney’s Office at (630) 407-8000 or the DuPage County Election Commission at (630) 407-5600.
