FIRST DEGREE MURDER CHARGES FILED IN MURDER OF ADDISON MAN

WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that First Degree Murder charges have been filed against 18 year-old Luis Villavicencio-Serna (d.o.b. 9/08/1990) of Chicago, in connection with the death of 18 year-old Armando Huerta Jr., of Addison (d.o.b. 2/25/1991.)

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on May 16, Officers from the Addison Police Department were dispatched in response to a report of shots fired.  Upon their arrival, officers encountered Huerta who had been shot twice.  It is alleged that Villavicencio-Serna was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an acquaintance of his.  It is further alleged that after circling the victim’s house at least once, the vehicle drove through a parking lot near the victim’s home and encountered Huerta.  It was at this time that Villavicencio-Serna allegedly fired multiple gun shots from the vehicle, two of which struck Huerta.  An investigation into the matter led officers from the Addison Police Department to Villavicencio-Serna, who was taken into custody the following day without incident.

“I would like to thank the Addison Police Department for their outstanding police work,” commented Birkett.  “I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Tom O’Connor for his perseverance in this case.  Thanks to their hard work, we are able to bring this prosecution against the defendant for killing this young man.”

First Degree Murder carries a possible sentence of 20-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).  If the defendant is found to have personally discharged the handgun that killed the victim there is an additional penalty of 25 years to life.

Villavicencio-Serna is currently being held in the DuPage County Jail on $5 million full cash bond.  His next court appearance is scheduled for June 1 in front of Judge Peter Dockery.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
