VILLA PARK MAN GETS SIX YEARS FOR FORGERY
Solicited Funds on Behalf of Veteran’s Charity While on Probation for Similar Scheme
WHEATON- DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that Donald L. McCarver, 44 (d.o.b 4/16/65), of 324 North Ardmore, Villa Park, has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for altering checks he had solicited on behalf of a Veteran’s charity. McCarver entered a plea of guilty to one count of Forgery this morning in front of Judge George Bakalis.
Today’s sentencing stems from allegations that between April 7 and April 19 of this year, on at least two occasions, McCarver went door to door in several Wheaton neighborhoods posing as a representative of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs – DOVA. McCarver would request charitable contributions on behalf of DOVA. He would then alter these checks to read Donald McCarver and cash them for personal use. At the time of this offense, McCarver was serving twenty-one months probation for his role in an illegal raffle. In this case, McCarver posed as a military reservist to fraudulently collect money from shoppers at local supermarkets and discount stores.
“This is the second time that Mr. McCarver has been found guilty of taking money intended for United State’s veterans and their families for his own personal use,” commented Birkett. “To steal money from those who risk their lives for us is a disgrace. I would like to thank the Wheaton Police Department as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Tom O’Connor and Joe Bauman for putting an end once and for all to Mr. McCarver’s deplorable and unpatriotic scheme.”
