WOMAN ACCUSED OF ABANDONING NEWBORN CHILD APPEARS IN BOND COURT

WHEATON – Charged with two counts of Obstructing Justice and one count of Child Endangerment for allegedly abandoning her newborn child, twenty four year-old Nunu Sung (d.o.b. 10/24/1984) of Crescent Street, Wheaton, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Peter Ostling ordered she be held on $100,000 with 10% to apply.

In the early morning hours of Friday, June 12, Wheaton Police Department responded to a missing persons report filed by Sung’s cousin with whom she had been living at the Wheaton address.  Unable to locate Sung, police officers returned to the home to find Sung at the residence.  It is alleged that sometime in the early morning hours of Friday, June 12, Sung gave birth to a child and then abandoned the newborn under a bush near the apartment where she lived.

“What Ms. Sung is accused of doing is very disturbing,” commented Birkett.  “Thankfully the baby survived.  One of our first steps in this prosecution will be to seek a Court ordered mental health examination of the defendant.”

Sung’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 25 in front of Judge Blanche Fawell.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
