NAPERVILLE MAN GETS 57 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that forty-seven year-old Stephen Silvey (d.o.b. 10/03/1961) formerly of 103 S. Testa Avenue, Naperville, was sentenced to 57 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the sexual assault of a young girl.  On June 18, 2009, Silvey entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse of a Child, one count of Intimidation and one count of Possession of Child Pornography.  Judge Peter Dockery, who accepted Silvey’s guilty pleas, handed down today’s sentence.

Today’s sentencing is the result of allegations that Silvey, on numerous occasions, sexually assaulted the minor child of a Naperville family he had befriended.  The assaults took place for two years beginning in December, 1999 through December, 2001 and again beginning October, 2004 through February, 2008.    Silvey faced a maximum of seventy-seven years behind bars.

“In all, Mr. Silvey repeatedly sexually assaulted his young victim for nearly five and one half years,” commented Birkett.  “He was able to con the victim’s family into a sense of trust in their home and with the victim.  He then destroyed that trust by engaging in the worst form of child molestation short of murder.  He has no concern for the victim and it is clear he has no remorse.    The adolescent innocence he took from his victim can never be restored.  The strength and courage she displayed in confronting her abuser however are what ultimately led us to justice here today.  We pray she has a full recovery.   I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Demetri Demopoulos and Vincenza LaMonica for their efforts in getting Mr. Silvey off the streets and behind bars where he will remain for a very long time, unable to prey on innocent young girls and their family again.”
