MICHIGAN MAN CHARGED IN HANOVER PARK STANDOFF
WHEATON - DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett announced today that charges have been filed against 33 year-old Edward J. Zielinski (d.o.b. 4/16/1976) of Michigan, in connection with an armed standoff with Hanover Park police last weekend. Zielinski is also facing Fugitive From Justice charges in Michigan where warrants have been issued for Assault With Intent to Murder and Aggravated Stalking.
On Saturday, October 24, 2009, Hanover Park police, working with authorities from Michigan, were dispatched to an address on Bamberg Court in Hanover Park. It was believed that Mr. Zielinski, an alleged fugitive from Michigan, was at the address. Upon their arrival at the address, Mr. Zielinski allegedly barricaded himself in the home and discharged a firearm on three occasions. After holding authorities at bay for approximately fifteen hours, Mr. Zielinski surrendered and was taken into custody. No police officers were injured during the standoff.
“I would like to thank the Hanover Park Police Department for their apprehension of Mr. Zielinski,” commented Birkett. “Because of their professionalism and ability to contain the situation, Mr. Zielinski was taken into custody before anyone was injured.”
In all, Zielinski was charged with one count of Fugitive From Justice, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, one count of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and one count of Aggravated Assault.
Zielinski appeared in Bond Court this morning where he was ordered to be held on a $2 million full cash bond on the Fugitive From Justice charge and a $1 million bond with 10% to apply on the remaining charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 23 in front of Judge Peter Dockery.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
