County and local officials, with continuous input from the public, collaborated to develop a seamless public transportation plan, one that would serve the county’s travel needs. The result is the DuPage Area Transit Plan adopted by the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference and by the DuPage County Board in September of 2002. The DuPage Area Transit Plan represents a new beginning for transit service in DuPage County. One of the main elements of the plan is the Bus Rapid Transit system identified as the “J” Route that connects the Aurora-Naperville area with Oakbrook, O’Hare International Airport and Schaumburg. The plan also includes a system of Intra-County Connectors running primarily on arterials and functioning in concert with Metra services. Local Circulators designed to feed into the Connector routes are included in the plan as well.
Full implementation of the DuPage Area Transit Plan shows an estimated ridership of 7.8 million trips annually. Additional benefits of implementing the plan include reduction of highway traffic congestion, enhanced access to major regional employment centers, increased accessibility and mobility options to those who live and work in DuPage County, improved air quality, and improved integration and connectivity of the transportation system across and between modes.
