PetLink Microchip
What is the PetLink Microchip?
The PetLink microchip is a permanent form of identification for your pet.
How
does it work?
It is a small microchip (about the size of a grain of
rice) that is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades. The microchip
is read by passing a scanner over the shoulder area of an animal. If your animal
is picked up by a police department or animal control it will be scanned for a
microchip. Most area vet hospitals also have scanners. The chip only
works to reunite you with your pets as long as your contact information is
maintained & up-to-date. Please contact Animal Control when
planning a move or in the event your contact information changes.
Where
can I get this done?
We do this for a $20.00 fee at DuPage County Animal
Care and Control. Microchip fee includes microchip implant and registration. We provide this service during any of our regular business hours. You will need a current rabies certificate in order for DuPage County
to microchip your pet. Your vet may also offer microchipping as a service. You will want to contact your vet directly for pricing.
Is this
painful for the animal?
The area in which the microchip is injected is
said to have about the same amount of nerve endings as the human ear lobe. It is
thought to be about as painful as getting your ear pierced. Most animals seem to
have little or no discomfort.
No appointment is needed during regular business hours with a current rabies vaccination certificate. Call our office at (630) 407-2800 with any questions.
