County Hosts Workshop on Preventing Abuse of Vulnerable Adults

DuPage County invites the community to attend an Abuse Prevention Workshop, “Keeping Vulnerable Adults Safe.” This is a free educational event providing medical professionals, home health care workers, clergy, social workers and families information about recognizing and preventing abuse and exploitation of seniors and disabled adults. The event begins at 9 a.m. at the College of DuPage on Wednesday, July 30th.

DuPage County Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Bob Larsen said the problem of abuse and exploitation within the senior and disabled population is increasing across the nation as the demographics shift. In DuPage County, the number of cases handled by the County’s Adult Protective Services unit is up more than 20% over last year. “We know that our efforts to educate caregivers are working as more cases of abuse and exploitation are being reported. Unfortunately, DuPage is following a statewide pattern in which the numbers of these cases are really increasing. We believe that getting more community awareness and education out there is a great way to protect seniors and disabled adults living in our neighborhoods. If we can prevent or intervene early in these situations, we can reduce the physical, emotional, and financial toll on the victims and their families,” said Larsen.

“Keeping Vulnerable Adults Safe” features a day of presentations providing information on setting up guardianship, legal issues around abuse, self-advocacy, interacting and communicating effectively with disabled adults, housing and job options. Attendees will also learn about supportive services available through DuPage County and various community organizations.

The “Keeping Vulnerable Adults Safe” event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 in Room SRC 2000, at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Attendees are asked to register for the event in advance by July 21, 2014 by contacting Jill Markussen from DuPage County Community Services at (630) 407-6494 or Jill.Markussen@dupageco.org.
