DuPage County Stormwater Management Continues to Operate Flood Control Facilities Early Tuesday
DuPage County Stormwater Management is currently operating the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control, Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir (Wood Dale) and Spring Creek Reservoir (Bloomingdale) on Salt Creek and Fawell Dam (Naperville) on the West Branch DuPage River following precipitation throughout the area beginning late Sunday through Monday evening.
Portions of DuPage County received up to 5.5 inches of rainfall through early Monday evening with widespread totals equaling approximately 4 inches. Intense rainfall late Monday afternoon triggered the operation of the Elmhurst Quarry, Spring Creek Reservoir and Fawell Dam. Elevations continued to rise Monday evening, which triggered the operation of the Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir just before midnight. All of the County's 12 gravity operated facilities also went into operation Monday evening.
Elevations in Salt Creek are beginning to recede near Elmhurst with the remainder of the stream expected to peak Tuesday afternoon. The West Branch DuPage River is beginning to show signs of peaking near Warrenville and is expected to begin receding this afternoon. DuPage County Stormwater Management staff is continuing to operate the major flood control facilities and will monitor stream elevations throughout the day Tuesday.
Of the 16 flood control facilities DuPage County operates, four larger facilities have mechanical equipment allowing staff to control them according to a predetermined operating plan. The remaining facilities protect the surrounding areas from flooding without human intervention using fixed weirs and natural drainage systems. In total, the facilities have a floodwater storage capacity of nearly four billion gallons.
