Highland Avenue Repairs to Begin June 15
Construction on Highland Avenue, including the two bridges over Route 56 and Interstate 88, will begin on June 15.
The Highland Avenue bridge over Route 56 was built in 1987. Since its original construction, no major repairs have been undertaken to the bridge deck. During this project, crews will replace bridge joints and perform concrete patching to address deficiencies and extend the service life of the bridge’s riding surface.
“Our roadways are a vital part of our community, and we’re excited to be able to extend the life of a major bridge in DuPage County,” said Transportation Committee Chairman Don Puchalski. “We ask that motorists be cautious and patient around the construction area to ensure the project can be completed in a timely and safe manner.”
Work will be completed in two stages. During the first stage, the outside lanes of the bridge decks and concrete pavement between the bridges will be patched, requiring temporary lane closures. Stage 1 is expected to take three to four weeks.
During Stage 2, Highland Avenue over Route 56 will be closed for the replacement of bridge joints and patching of the bridge deck and concrete pavement. The closure of the bridge is tentatively scheduled to begin after July 4, and the closure is expected to last for six weeks.
Construction is expected to be completed by Labor Day weekend.
