DuPage County to Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

DuPage County residents may safely dispose of household hazardous and chemical waste items during a free collection event being held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton.

“The DuPage County Board dedicated $150,000 allocated through the federal Coronavirus Aid Recovery and Economic Security, or CARES Act, to conduct this free collection event for our residents,” said Liz Chaplin, Chairwoman of the DuPage Environmental Committee. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, previous events had to be cancelled. This free community collection helps to ensure household hazardous waste is disposed of properly and does not end up in our landfills or local waterways.”

Items accepted during the collection event include: used oil and anti-freeze, solvents and pool chemicals, cooking oil, poisons and pesticides, aerosol and oil-based paints and stains, some types of medication, lawn and garden chemicals and fertilizers, rechargeable and lithium batteries, boat and automotive batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, small propane and refrigerant tanks.

Items not accepted include: ammunition, fireworks and explosives, fire extinguishers, latex paint, sharps or syringes, medical waste, DEA controlled medications or substances, radioactive materials, household garbage, business or institutional waste, empty containers, or traditional recyclables.
