Gary Avenue Bike/Pedestrian Path

Project Location(s)

County Highway 23 - Gary Avenue, from the Great Western Trail to Army Trail Road.
County Highway 11 - Army Trail Road, between Gary Avenue and 84 Court.

Short Description of Work

The project includes the installation of an asphalt path, along with necessary driveway reconstruction, traffic signal work at North Avenue, and retaining walls.  Although not included in this contract, the railroad will be improving the railroad crossing for the bike path.

This project is a joint effort between DuPage County and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Traffic Control

Short-term lane closures will be needed as the contractor performs the work.
A long-term lane closure has been established for construction of the retaining wall south of the Gary Avenue railroad tracks.  One of the dual left turn lanes from westbound Army Trail Road to Gary Avenue has been closed as well.

Completion Date

80 Working Days are allowed per the contract.

Construction Status

Message signs were erected on April 6, 2020 to inform motorists of the upcoming construction.
The Contractor started installing erosion control measures on April 13, 2020.
The largest retaining wall on the project, which is located south of the railroad tracks, has been completed. Several utilites are to be located behind the wall.  Backfilling the wall will be completed soon.
Work on two of the smaller retaining walls has begun.
Construction of the last smaller retaining wall is waiting for some utilities to be relocated.
General grading/earthwork operations for the remainder of the path has begun. 
The contractor expects to do most of the asphalt paving within the next week between North Avenue and Army Trail Road.
Much of the work between the Great Western Trail and North Avenue is waiting for utilities to be relocated.
