McDowell Grove Dam Modification
The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the McDowell Grove Dam in the 1930s. The dam created a small recreation lake used by Camp McDowell Army Base that was located in the now, McDowell Grove Forest Preserve. The dam was found to severely impact water quality on the West Branch DuPage River as well as limit fish passage and recreational opportunities. The dam was recommended to be removed by the DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup and was also recommended to be removed in the County’s own West Branch DuPage River Watershed Plan. The County applied for Federal funding for the project and, with the assistance of Illinois State Senator Durbin has received a grant from the NRCS. The project was substantially completed in November 2008.
