East Branch DuPage River Watershed-Based Water Quality Plan

Overview

DuPage County Stormwater Management is currently studying the East Branch DuPage River Watershed to identify water quality issues and solutions to improve water quality throughout the watershed. DuPage County received a 604b grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to complete a water quality-based plan for the watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all of the surface water drains into the same place, in this case, the East Branch DuPage River.

Stakeholders

A stakeholder group has been formed to provide input and data during the development of the East Branch DuPage River Water Quality Watershed Plan, which will be accomplished through regular meetings and an individual survey including a request for applicable data. The stakeholder group is comprised primarily of representatives from DuPage County, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the Illinois Tollway, non-profits, municipalities, park districts, townships, sanitary districts and school districts within the watershed.

In addition, the help of residents, businesses and others within the watershed, which flows through the central portion of DuPage County, is requested. As part of the planning process, the County is looking for input on water quality concerns in the area, including erosion, algae, debris jams, sediment build-up or other observations. DuPage County staff will then use this information to develop conceptual water quality initiatives, such as streambank stabilization and green infrastructure projects, for inclusion in the watershed plan. Included projects may be eligible for State and Federal funding.

Report a Stream Observation

Meetings

A virtual stakeholder meeting was held on virtually on Thursday, May 21 at 2pm. DuPage County Stormwater Management staff requested input on water quality projects and site locations. Maps of the East Branch DuPage River are provided below for reference.

Next Steps

DuPage County Stormwater Management anticipates a draft of the East Branch DuPage River Water Quality-Based Watershed Plan will be completed Spring 2021. In addition to reporting stream observations and concerns, residents can also help improve the health of the East Branch DuPage River Watershed by:

  • Engaging in practices and habits that limit pollutants in stormwater runoff;
  • Considering green home improvement projects to help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff leaving your property;
  • Adopting-a-Stream to remove trash and debris from in and around streams; or
  • Spreading the word about how to improve the East Branch DuPage River to your neighbors!
