Job Description

UNION: Local 399 

Under direction; performs work of considerable difficulty as a lead Electrician on highly diversified and industrial types of equipment; performs related duties as assigned.

This is skilled work of the journeyman's level with responsibility for the performance of highly specialized electrical maintenance and repair operations involving hazardous working conditions associated with 480 volt three phase circuits. Work is distinguished by acting as a lead worker to train new employees, and by using independent judgment to prioritize and plan electrical projects. An employee in this class is responsible for directing the work of Electrician Technicians and Electricians. Work is performed under the direction of the Electrical Systems Supervisor and is performed in accordance with applicable codes and standard trade practices.

• Directs the work of subordinate personnel engaged in electrical maintenance activities
• Plans for, designs, installs and repairs a variety of complex electrical equipment including electronic controls, switchboards, control centers and panels, relays, circuit breakers and various other types of electronic equipment involving transistor circuits
• Establishes balance loads
• Lays out and wires complex circuits
• Diagnoses electrical problems and replaces or repairs parts
• Detects and replaces defective control modules
• Tests and makes adjustments
• Prepares wiring diagrams to record all changes
• Reviews blueprints and makes necessary corrections in advance of work to be performed
• Orders supplies and maintains inventory and various work records
• Prepares work schedules
• Outlines operating procedures and ensures that all safety precautions are observed
• Schedules preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment
• Trains and instructs Electrician Technicians and Electricians in operations and procedures
• Supervises work of Electrician Technicians and Electricians to ensure all work performed is in accordance with codes
• Makes modifications to older equipment to keep it operating
• Keeps supervisor informed of modifications
• Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

• Adjusts work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities as assigned.
• Depending on assignment may maintain required emergency management training, licensure and/or certifications.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned within job classification.

• Using computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, etc.
• Applying an acquired knowledge of procedures, rules, regulations and services applicable to the assigned office

• Using applicable tools and equipment related to area of assignment
• Manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department and division staff, other departments and others, such as vendors
• Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Completion of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma equivalent; Completion of electrical trade courses plus eight years of experience in industrial electrical work including electronic circuitry; or four years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician including one year as a supervisor or lead worker; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Light Work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Use of arm and /or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than for sedentary work.
