Under general supervision; performs work of considerable difficulty in the operation, maintenance and repair of the Power Plant, tunnel, and County owned or leased facilities; performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration equipment up to 150 tons in County buildings; performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is assigned duties which require independent actions, are recurring in nature and are carried out according to standard practices and general work instructions while performing skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration equipment; coordinating related work completed by contractors. Assignments are verbal or written and may include sketches, layouts or blue prints. General supervision is received for work in progress and at the end of a shift from a Facilities Manager or Facilities Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operates, maintains and repairs all Power Plant, tunnel, and County owned or leased facilities, and related equipment (e.g. low pressure steam boilers, centrifugal and absorption chillers, air conditioning units, emergency electric power generators, air compressors, heat exchangers, pumping systems, air handlers, vacuum and circulating pumps, hot water systems, circulating and ventilating fans, water softeners, and other mechanical, steam, pneumatically or electrically powered equipment).
• Recover, inventory, and dispose of properly if required refrigerant from equipment (e.g. drinking fountains, refrigerators/ freezers, ice machines, etc.)
• Maintain and record current, purchased, and recovered refrigerant inventory.
• Maintains and repairs various types of mechanical equipment of the HVAC system, such as feed pumps, vacuum pumps, circulating pumps, air compressors, refrigeration compressors, condensers, evaporators, hot water generators, circulating and ventilating fans, and similar mechanical, steam or electrically operated equipment.
• Maintains and repairs various types of standalone refrigerated equipment throughout the County facilities, such as refrigerators, cooler, and walk-in coolers.
• Completes preventive maintenance and emergency work orders.
• Maintains records of work performed.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Conducts preventative maintenance and checks operation for proper functioning of equipment.
• Maintains inventory and recommends ordering of stock and materials to supervisor
• Provides assistance to other labor trades classifications.
• Completes estimates of time and materials to complete projects.
• Provides response to facilities’ work order requests.
• Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Adjusts work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities as assigned.
• Depending on assignment may maintain required emergency management training, licensure and/or certifications.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned within job classification.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Completion of an Associate’s degree in HVAC and Refrigeration and four years of experience installing, operating, repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation and refrigeration equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
