Title: Animal Control Officer

Hours: Full-Time: 37.5 hours per week, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 5 days a week with varying days, and rotating on-call schedule

Salary: $38,000-$42,000 annually

There is one (1) position open at this time.

Responsibilities include:
• Investigates and processes dangerous/vicious dog reports and declarations
• Records and maintains written logs related to animal bites
• Performs follow-up work on bite reports, complaints, rabies observation requirements and ordinance compliance
• Counsels and provides education for citizens in responsible pet ownership including dangerous dogs and basic humane care
• Serves as a resource for citizens, veterinary community, and local authorities for questions pertaining to the Animal Control Act, Humane Care Act, and responsible pet ownership
• Issues citations for violation of the Animal Control Act and Humane Care Acts and County ordinance
• Testifies in court
• Collects, prepares, documents and delivers specimens for rabies testing
• Investigates and responds to stray, unwanted, neglected, sick and injured animals as required for rabies control and humane treatment
• Investigates animal law violations, public safety concerns, alleged nuisances and humane complaints
• Performs routine animal apprehension, rescue and control work
• Handles and transports sick, injured and aggressive domestic animals and injured or sick wildlife
• Performs euthanasia
• Provides training education programs for the public, municipal agencies and veterinary clinics
• Maintains work vehicle maintenance schedule and other assigned field equipment
• Maintains records and prepares reports

Physical requirements and work environment:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be required to run, reach with hands and arms, operate physical restraint equipment, and lift up to 50 lbs.  
• While performing the duties and responsibilities the employee will be exposed to animal bites and/or scratches, loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, exposure to human and animal remains in varying states of decomposition, varying weather conditions and situations

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:
• A High School Diploma or GED 
• A valid Illinois Driver's License in good standing
• One (1) year of animal science or related course work
• One (1) year of experience working as an officer in an animal control or animal shelter
• Credit to meet these qualifications will be granted to former interns of DuPage County Animal Services

The preferred candidate will have:
• Ability to complete Euthanasia Technician Certification training course 
• Experience as a Community Service Officer, Enforcement Officer or other similar position in an open admission municipal shelter located in a metropolitan area
• Level 1 and/or Level 2 training through National Animal Control Association, (NACA), National Animal Control & Humane Officer Academy (NACHO), or similar coursework through Animal Control Training Services (ACTS)
