Fire at Bully LiFe / D and D Kennels
In the early morning hours of Monday, January 14th DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS) responded to a call from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department to help recover animals involved in a fire at the D and D Kennels facility located in West
Chicago. DCAS officers and staff responded, helping to secure 23 of the 30 surviving dogs. Twenty-three were removed from the location and brought to the DCAS shelter. DCAS also recovered the bodies of 29 deceased dogs from the scene and brought
them to DCAS for identification – wherever possible – and cremation. The vast majority of the dogs involved in the incident were owned by third party rescue organizations including Bully Life, the rescue run by the owner/operator of D and D Kennels.
As of today (1/16/19), only three of the surviving dogs remain at DCAS and all are expected to be reclaimed before the end of the week.
We at DCAS are incredibly grateful for the kind words, offers of assistance, and show of support that volunteers, friends, the rescue community, and even complete strangers have showered upon our team. It means the world to us. Those who would like to
help can do so by donating supplies to benefit DCAS’s existing population of shelter dogs. See below for a list of Wish List items that will directly benefit DCAS shelter dogs and help make their stay at the shelter a little more comfortable.
We join the community in mourning this terrible loss of life. Our own staff members knew and loved some of these dogs. DCAS is working with our partners to plan a ceremony honoring these animals. Our hope is that we can find hope and healing together.

DuPage County Animal Services is a self-supporting (non taxpayer funded) county department designed to:
Vaccinate Against Rabies, It's The Law!
Each year DuPage County Animal Services and the DuPage County Health Department keep track of the number of positive cases of rabies found in wildlife within the county. For the health and safety of all the people and pets of DuPage County, please make
sure all dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccination - even if kept indoors. It's the law.
In-Kennel Enrichment Programs
DuPage County Animal Services staff work together to ensure that our shelter animals are healthy, happy, and sound in the unfamiliar shelter environment until they are adopted. Through our kennel enrichment program staff and volunteers engage animals
with various activities to keep them well, both physically and mentally. Enrichment is a vital part of our successful adoption program.
